Last month I was invited to China to join artists from around the world to paint on the subject of peace and transformation. The Miracle Mural project was located in Hua Quan Village, in the Jianxi province, in one of the largest art and cultural centers in the world. The village features stunning views of Dragon Tiger Mountain, which is a World Heritage Site recognized as the birthplace of Taoism. I was honored to be included in the ranks of the other world-class artists that participated in the creation of what will be a total of 100 murals around the village, 80 of which are now complete.

Never underestimate how attached a community can become to a mural.

I learned this first hand while renovating the underwater mural at the California Pedestrian Underpass at the end of California Avenue in Palo Alto. It is a heavily used underpass. Throughout my days painting there, I heard a steady stream of comments that revealed how attached the community was to this particular mural. People would stop to point out their favorite fish, or want to share with me their fond memories of watching the original mural go up. Most commonly, people stopped just to make sure that I am only touching it up, right?

At some point during the “Nature is Home” fine art mural project on Ilha das Flores, a small island in the Azores, the project took on a life of its own. I can pinpoint the moment: it was the afternoon I painted this canary. We had asked - and been granted – permission to paint the wall from the owners of the ruin just that morning. Though the mural only took three hours to complete, this piece looked and felt integrated into the soul of the island.

"We believe that art has the capacity to create and reinvent life in unimaginable ways."
- Choki.org

I just wrapped up my dream job. I painted fifteen nature themed murals in about as many days on a lush, tiny Portuguese island in the middle of the Atlantic called Ilha das Flores, The Island of Flowers.

I have been carrying a lingering euphoria around with me for months, ever since my clients, Casey and Andrea, sent me the first e-mail with their idea and photos of the Island of Flores. For me, the whole project unfolded with a “meant to be” quality, including alignment of purpose, subject of the artwork, and the perfect challenge for me as an artist...

Google.org is focused on supporting non-profits that address inclusion, economic opportunity and education. One of the biggest challenges facing the non-profit community in the Bay Area is the high price of real estate. One way Google.org is addressing this challenge is they just finished a "Google quality" office and meeting space that will be available for non-profit organizations to use on the ground floor of their Embarcadero office in San Francisco. The space includes all the expected Google perks like a stocked mini kitchen but most importantly allows easy access and fluid collaboration between Google employees and the non-profit community...
