The ugly eyesore becomes a beautiful focal point. Unnoticed becomes noteworthy. This birth of beauty, engagement, and delight in a neglected space, particularly in public spaces, is why I paint murals. Sometimes I'm surprised that the turnarounds I have come to expect still surprise other people.

Before and After, Fontana Park water vault

Public entities like Caltrans, PG&E, the water district, as well as some city governments and school districts may be “art ambivalent”, but the fact is they own A LOT of the ugly canvases that are ripe for bringing transformations through art into our communities. Key decision makers may not be familiar with the upside of public art if they haven’t experienced a community art success story firsthand, but they can imagine many potential risks: fear of inappropriate art, tagging, copyright lawsuits, not being able to paint over the artwork at the end of its life cycle, etc. Where I see an abundance of blank walls as opportunities for transformation, many decision makers see an opportunity for problems. I wonder if one of the primary obstacles might be overcome by educating decision makers what is possible, (mural art deters tagging, improves individual well being, unifies communities, improves the local economy, academic performance, tourism, and sparks creativity to name a few) and also to share best practices that ensure positive outcomes so that key decision makers can make an easy and informed choice where everyone wins.

Before and After, Fontana Park water vault

I recently was one of six artists selected to paint 12 utility boxes at Fontana Park in San Jose. Michael Ogilvie, the Director of Public Art for the City of San Jose, tracked the effort it took for approvals and coordination of the project. Here is the data:

693 emails

77 phone conversations

42 in person and group meetings

3 community events

A cumulative of 600 hours of artist time for their labor in creating their designs and painting the murals.

250 hours of staff time for project management and coordinating all the logistics.

This does not include the help and time from the Anti-Graffiti team for applying the protective clear coat (at a cost of about $11,000), or all of the volunteer hours that stakeholders have put into this.

That is a crazy amount of effort for a wee bit of art. It’s worth noting here that Michael is an efficient person. We have worked on two projects together and he gets to the point quickly and keeps all the cats (artists, government agencies) herded in the same direction without fuss. In Michael’s words: “By comparison, this project was a pretty small project as it did not require engineering (soils, structural, electric), off-site fabrication, transportation of large scale objects, road closures, complex installation processes, or excessive inter-departmental or inter-agency coordination (though water district approvals had to go through an extensive evaluation process).”

I can’t help but wonder if the benefits and opportunities of public art were better articulated to the “general public”, (particularly those who enjoy art), then the increased public awareness would lead to public pressure on decision-makers and organizations like Caltrans, the Water District, PG&E, school districts, and intra-governmental agencies to create better systems and streamlined processes - wherever and whenever possible - to support more art getting made.

The impetus for the water vault project came from the Fontana Parks Neighborhood Association who organized and lobbied their local representatives to have art in their park. Grassroots art advocacy is at the root of every public art project that happens. Despite the extensive coordination effort required, the vaults came out beautiful. Local residents are thrilled with the colorful vaults they now enjoy on their daily walks.

Artwork by (1.)Vanessa Stevens (2.)Oree Originol (3.)Jane Kim (4.)Megan Stevens and (5.)Andrew Kong Knight

My husband will be the first to tell you: I am not a patient person. I would have given up after 5 emails in Michael’s process. I want to advocate for what I see as the amazing potential for transformation in our public spaces but art advocacy seems, honestly, like a slog. I brainstormed on how I might best share my enthusiasm for (and firsthand experience of) the transformative power of public art without spending my weeknights at city council meetings, citing statistics under fluorescent lights.

Paz de la Calzada, Tenderloin Dreamscapes, a video animation in San Francisco

"Circut Board Schematics" and "Motherboard" wallpaper by Shannon Geis

One of my favorite ways to learn something new these days is to listen to podcasts. It occurred to me a podcast might be an enjoyable way for me to be useful; I could just turn on a mic and share a cup of tea with an artist or art advocate and learn about what is working, what isn't, and where the opportunities are to get more mural art made. If These Walls Could Talk is my answer to art advocacy, by communicating the transformational opportunity of public art, especially for the San Jose and peninsula communities, and sharing information around best practices for successful projects.

I invite you to check out either of these If These Walls Could Talk episodes:

Episode 5: Artist’s Perspective: An interview with artists Paz de la Calzada and Shannon Geis (Their art is featured above.)

Episode 6: The value of a Public Art Master Plan with Amanda Golden of Designing Local (Her efforts helped get this cute panda mural painted in Fort Wayne.)

"Panda" by Tammy Davis, Fort Wayne, Indiana

It would be an act of generosity, and art advocacy, to subscribe to the podcast, listen to an episode, rate and review it. The reviews will help me understand what was - and was not - useful, and the subscriptions help other people find my podcast.

"Art transformation facilitator" is not a business category with the IRS, and neither is "podcast host". (I was working on my taxes today, it's not there.) Some changes are worth fighting for, others not so much. My hope is that through the stories and insights of artists and art advocates, the transformative power of art (and how it happens) can become common knowledge, and more great art can get made. Art matters.

With respect,

Find it on your favorite podcast player:

iTunes
Google Podcasts
Blubrry
Overcast
Pocket Casts
Podchaser
RadioPublic
Stitcher
TuneIn

Thu, 31 Jan 2019 15:37:58 +0000 Morgan Bricca 487 at https://www.morganmurals.com Morgan's Top 18 of 2018 https://www.morganmurals.com/blog/morgans-top-18-of-2018

A list, in no particular order, of what I am proud of this year. I am weaving together work and life and art milestones because it is all one continuous inhale and exhale to me.

1. Running my first Kickstarter campaign. We raised $9500 in 4 days to fund painting a bus for Siena Youth Center in an economically challenged neighborhood on Redwood City. These kids can now go on field trips and nature adventures, and in style.

2. My dad was a major donor to the fundraising effort, and his campaign award was a portrait with wife, Terry. These two people mean the world to me, and I loved painting them.

3. I started a podcast If These Walls Could Talk to connect and support the mural art community in the bay area.

4. I was awarded the biggest commission of my career with the City of San Jose, a 160’ long wall that will face a community park. I am looking forward to painting that in 2019.

5. I was invited to be a teaching assistant for a meditation retreat at Esalen, in Big Sur with my teacher, Roma Hammel. This was the equivalent of a paid vacation, which is a rare diamond for a soloprenuer.

6. I incorporated Rumi quotes into my art for the first time, on a series of utility boxes in Fontana Park in San Jose. I love Rumi. I would be happy just to paint Rumi quotes from here on out.

7. I was featured on primetime TV on NBC as part of a “Bay Area Proud” series, a 5 minute, weekly segment at 5 pm that highlights a positive story in the community. I’m grateful I made that time slot over any other. If I was on the 6 o'clock news, it would have been a different kind of story.

8. I loved painting murals for lululemon, with more in the pipeline. The culture of lululemon is, honestly, awesomely pro-female. They support local art through their stores, and they make great stuff. I loved my "hikes as research" and writing 'Breathe Deeply' across this piece, a public service reminder for busy shoppers.

9. I went for a retro challenge and channeled Michelangelo’s stamina for a series of ceiling paintings, complete with chubby putti and naked ladies.

10. I learned how to spray paint. I tested out different effects to get a soft, "blurred photograph" feel for the background on a series of 20 bird murals on utility boxes in Pleasanton, CA. I still prefer my brushes, but I’m also glad to have another tool in my toolbox.

11. I painted my first glitter mural (with a “selfie moment”) for a middle school in Los Altos, co-designed with the students.

12. I painted a mural for a friend who has been struggling with a rare and debilitating form of cancer for 8 years. Lisa spends significant chunks of her day in bed. She shared with me last week how much having the murals in her room has meant for her. It touched me deeply and reinforced to me the impact art can have in our lives. Murals are not just for kids.

13. Painting my teenagers, Lucas and Allie. Only six months later and these paintings look dated. They are growing up so fast.

14. I took a road trip up to Vancouver with Lucas, during which I painted my van. This has led to requests to paint other people’s cars, which I am having fun with.

15. Painting my driveway. Coming home is more fun than ever.

16. Getting stuck on a roof. That’s an entertaining story I can beat to death at dinner parties for years to come.

17. My guiding quote this year, that hangs above my desk:

18. My support system. The neighbor who walks my dog. My friend who randomly brings me soup, offers to pick up my kid, joins me on a hike. I might just hide in bed all day without the many people who offer so much kindness and support. I am able to do what I do what I do because of the people in my life. I am grateful. With all my ambitious plans for 2019, I am going to need every bowl of hot soup I am offered.

Thank you for being part of my year. I wish you many big blessings for 2019.

With love,

Sun, 30 Dec 2018 20:00:00 +0000 Morgan Bricca 484 at https://www.morganmurals.com Is a Mural in your Future? Otherwise, you could just call a lifeline, like those cute guys that live over at the fire department to come rescue you, and that would be a great story. You also have to have the door you entered through to get on the roof locked behind you. This is improbable, unless someone happened to come by and notice the door was unlocked, and do you the unexpected favor of locking it. I had a dedicated scissor lift operator to take me up and down from the sidewalk as needed, to make absolutely certain my current predicament would be impossible, but that day I had decided to work late, and Joseph had gone home for the day. One is not properly stuck unless one has a single remaining option: to holler at the top of your lungs in the general direction of the street below.

A panorama view from the roof

This mural was commissioned by Andy Beckstoffer, who has been growing grapes for wine in Napa for 48 years. Mr Beckstoffer purchased and renovated the original Napa Register Building located on the corner of Coombs and Main Street, and the mural was the final phase of the renovation. The mural depicts the Beckstoffer farm in Rutherford. Only a sliver of the seventy-foot long mural can be see from the street, but Archer guests with east facing rooms can enjoy the full view.

A highlight of the project for me was staying at the newly built Archer Hotel. I would dock them one star in my review because of their slow response time to the concerned citizens telling them there was a woman stuck on their roof. They simply didn't believe it. When they finally came up to unlock the patio door of my room, which is how I got on the roof, they asked for ID before they would let me in. On second thought, they deserve that fifth star back because their security is so good.

You can watch the mural being painted start to finish in this video:

Click to watch a time lapse of the mural being painted.

The Napa Register sent over J.L Souza, their photo editor, to cover the project. I would put my odds of meeting someone from that teeny-tiny island in the middle of the Atlantic even lower than my odds of getting stuck on a roof, but life is full of surprises. I was thrilled that NBC ran a “Bay Area Proud” segment about the project I just wrapped up at Stoneridge Creek in Pleasanton. This month, you get too choose: keep reading or take the shortcut and watch this awesome video that Garvin Thomas put together:

Garvin Thomas is a “one man show”: photographer, reporter, writer and news anchor. He has put together and presented over 500 stories about inspiring people in the Bay Area for NBC. It might make production complicated, but Garvin could certainly be the subject of one of his own segments. I collaborated with photographer Ray Rychnovsky on the Stoneridge project and we enjoyed getting “mic’d up” and spending an afternoon sharing the joy of our small project with Garvin.

Why did this project happen?

Stoneridge Creek found out about me through the Kickstarter campaign I put together back in January to fund painting a mural on a bus for the St Francis Siena Youth Center in Redwood City. Remember the bus project?

One of the donors on that campaing also happened to be one of the owners at Stoneridge Creek Senior Living Community. He had the (fabulous) idea that mural art would be a great addition to the bare walls along this long, outdoor corridor that links residential apartments to the main clubhouse.

The design was for a series of nine landscape murals that celebrated the local nature preserves. The artwork would transition from time of day - midday to dusk- and also season, spring through fall. The client introduced me to a resident who was also a talented wildlife photographer. I met up with Ray on my first day on the job, looked through his photos, and saw that incorporating wildlife images would greatly improve upon my initial concept.

I always want my work to be as meaningful and relevant as possible to those who will enjoy the artwork every day. In this case, collaborating with a well-known creative at Stoneridge Creek made the project truly community based. Ray gives talks and exhibitions of his work for the community, sends out photo journal emails, and produces an annual wildlife calendar. Hanging out with the “coolest kid” on campus also helped me gain early acceptance with the Stoneridge Creek community.

There used to be a beloved fox family on campus until they started getting into trashes and became a nuisance. Opinions varied as to the fate of the foxes, but everyone recognized the fox in the mural. I also received the feedback that for both the fox and the deer, their eyes followed them - and for some the heads even turned slightly- as they walked by. Residents from the far side of campus would stop by the artwork to determine for themselves whether the wildlife turned their heads to watch them as they walked by.

My fluid creative process helps ensure that my art is site-specific. I let inspiration from the immediate environment, everything from overhead cloud patterns and season, to daily interactions with people I meet, influence the content and tone of the artwork. Let’s hope I am not in a bad mood when I go to work. I might put a predator and their prey in the same panel. On this day, all the animals were safe.

The wildlife based on Ray's photos are a primary feature in each mural. Ray has an abundance of great waterfowl shots because of the creek that runs adjacent to the develpment. Ray and I took a walk to see his favorite spots to photograph, and he loaned me an extra pair of binoculars for the excursion. The level of detail I could see was a revelation; the individual bird feathers, the details in the colors of each reed along the shore. I now keep a pair of binoculars in my glove box. Duh. I'm still learning how to see better, both literally and figuratively.

Can you spot where each of Rays photos show up in the murals?

While working at Stoneridge Creek I felt like I had a couple hundred sets of grandparents encouraging me along. At first, a few residents expressed concern about the cost of the project, or the strong colors I used for the base coat. By the end of the project, I didn't hear those concerns but did notice the arcade had become a popular destination to take visiting family members. An easy hike with great views: what could be better?

I love to create artwork that celebrates the wildness that is outside our back fences, and just beyond our freeways. I had other adventures, including a road trip through the northwest with my son (he did most of the driving) and spending a week hiking in Telluride, Colorado. Even though I only went to one museum this summer, the booming popularity in murals, and public art in general, meant I still saw plenty of great art. Some of the pieces I encountered inspired me to stretch my creative efforts in new directions. Here are a few highlights from my serendipitous encounters art this summer.

I spent one day as a tourist not far from home, walking around Jack London Square in Oakland to see the nine new murals there. The were created this past spring as part of the Bay Area Mural (BAM) Festival. "Love Letter To Oakland" by David Burke Studio was my favorite:

The storytelling, visual impact and execution of this mural are all incredibly well done. I discovered this mural across the street from Powell's bookstore. It was unsigned, but I recognized the artist right away.

Faith XLVII is my favorite public mural artist. She uses greytoned colors, a charcoal and cream color palette with washes of layered paint. Her draftsmanship is always superb. But what I love most about her work is the distinctly feminine feel of the imagery, which is enhanced by the heavy, masculine architecture of the buildings she typically paints on.

I saw this mural at Burnside Brewing in Portland.

I love the illustrative shapes, the line element, and the modern feel. It reminds me of another mural I love by Arcy, also graphic in nature. The shapes, color, shadow and feel of the background of this piece give it a room enough to feel intuitive and surreal while still feeling clean and modern.

Vancouver was a highlight of our trip. We had our bikes with us, and the bike path system made seeing the whole city a breeze. I’ve never visited a place where good city planning was more evident. It was a beautiful Saturday morning and we were on our way to Granville Island public market when the bike path opened up to this sweet scene with a painted public piano (with a talented musician playing it), colorful street painting by Emily Gray, and a row of Adirondack chairs as well as benches from which to take in the view of the city. Wow.

For a moment, imagine this scene another way: take away the artwork on the ground, the painted piano, the Adirondack chairs. Imagine how different this space would be. How much money do you think the city spent on those three items? And consider the value this activated plaza adds to the community and the tourists who are left with a lasting impression. This is what I am talking about, folks. To me, great art is not about the who and the what, it is about the where and the why. Good public art transforms the whole experience of place.

This sculpture, "Non-sign II", sits at the Canadian/US border.

I am taken with how something metal and spikey can leave such a soft, surreal impression. What an interesting piece to have at a bureaucratic processing junction. Lots of directional and informational signs abound. Have your passport ready. Do not exit your car. Declare the following items. And then this, "non-sign". It is wonderfully site-specific.

Totally different, yet still completely aligned with it's enviornment, is this “welcome mat” mosaic on Bainbridge Island, Washington. It is made primarily from glass and stones picked up on the beaches around the island. Each square of the artwork celebrates an aspect of the community. Coming across this piece reminded me that an item on my bucket list is to learn to paint and fire tiles, so I can create mural mosaics. I love the bold color, ease, and fluidity of paint, but the longevity and durability of working with tile stone and glass materials is appealing.

My hand started twitching from all the inspiration I enountered during the trip. While waiting in the ferry line on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands, WA, I started painting the largest canvas I had on hand: my van.

My van has needed a new paint job for a while. Was I really going to spend thousands of dollars to repaint it silver? The inspiration for the design on my van came to me during a day off a few months back. I was poking around Sausalito with my BFF when I spotted a pair of pants with a print of a dream catcher. I wasn't looking for anything in particular, which, of course, is when inspiration is most likely to visit. I am not sure why I would see a pair of pants and think ,"that would look great on my van", but I've learned life gets more interesting when I listen to my hunches. I consider the van painting more like an ongoing knitting project that I can pick up anytime; it is certainly not yet finished. There are still dings that need to be masked with paint - I mean art. Also, the "inspiration pants" have rhinestones. My van is whispering to me that she could use a little bling.

After the road trip I headed to Telluride, CO where I met up with four friends I met 25 years ago when I lived in Granada, Spain. It was a dreamy week traversing the incredible natural beauty of Telluride and reconnecting with some of my favorite people on the planet. I was inspired to leave a thank you gift behind on the walls of my friend's house in Telluride. I combined the dream catcher motif that I had been thinking about with a landscape from our day of paddle boarding and hiking around an alpine lake. It was a dream, and it was caught, at least in paint.

I came home from my summer adventures absolutely more inspired for my own work.

Labor Day is a great day to celebrate and remember that it is when we are at play, not work, that our best ideas come to us. It debuted as an Olympic event in 2016. The teams only have seven players each (compared with traditional rugby's 15) and each half of the game is only seven minutes, so the total game time is about 16 minutes long, including the two-minute half time. The scores are comparable to rugby scores since defenders are more spaced out. Lots of scoring, lots of speed, every second counts. It's exciting.

Here is a photo of yesterday's opening ceremony at the Embarcadero plaza:

So why is Morgan suddenly so interested in Rugby? I've never mentioned sports before in this blog, and between the Warriors and the Giants, there have been plenty of opporunities. (whoop! whoop!) Hmmm. What's up Morgan? You guessed it. I have a horse in the race -or more accurately a work of art on display - during the Rugby Sevens World Cup.

I was hired to create a mural that would serve as a backdrop for the opening and closing ceremonies, and throughout the weekend as a media backdrop. The theme for this event is "Make Your Mark", and I turned the words into a work of art which the team captains all signed during the opening ceremony. The artwork will be donated to an elementary school in Oakland at the end of the event.

"Sevens" tournaments are traditionally known for having more of a relaxed atmosphere than fifteen-a-side games, and are usually called "festivals". Many fans will get dressed up or put on themed costumes for the events. I experienced the playful culture around the sport firsthand at yesterday's opening ceremony.

I gave each team captain strict instructions on where to sign the mural as they went onstage, on the lower half of the mural where it was just blue. In addition to awesome dance moves and stage antics, I also learned these Sevens players are not sticklers with art. The majority of signatures were on the top half of the artwork. The joke is on me, it looks better with the signatures up top anyway.

You can check out #makeyourmark on Instagram over the weekend to see how the Rugby fun develops. I have been converted into a fan. Here are three great reasons you should join me as a Rugby Sevens fan and come out to see some World Cup games this weekend (or at least catch a few games on T.V.:

1. Short games. So different from the Soccer World Cup. Instead of spending your afternoon on the couch to watch a game, you can be back out mowing the lawn before you finish your first beer. The World Cup is sudden death elimination, so the stakes are high on every minute of play.

2. You only have to remember the names of seven players of your favorite team.

3. This contributes to World Peace. I'm serious. Watching these amazing athletes from about 30 different countries share their infectious energy for play and sport is what peace looks like. We don't have it everywhere, all the time in the world right now, but this is a particularly cool example of humans from around the world coming together to celebrate amazing athletic skill. The men and women's events are at the same venue, AT&T Park, so chalk one up for gender equality to boot.

There are still some tickets available. For the couch potatoes, it will be broadcast on NBC.

No guarantees on sports coverage in future blogs.

Cheers,

Sat, 21 Jul 2018 00:00:00 +0000 Morgan Bricca 468 at https://www.morganmurals.com Is Delight Legit? https://www.morganmurals.com/blog/is-delight-legit
I recently painted my driveway.

I titled the driveway art "Friday Happy Hour". I was in the middle of a well deserved sprawl on the couch one Friday afternoon when I decided to watch a TED talk a friend had forwarded to me, Where Joy Hides and How to Find It. I was so inspired by what I learned that I peeled myself off the couch and started mixing paints. I don't recommend watching this video if you are susceptible to spontaneous bouts of rearranging furniture or painting your walls bright colors. Unfortunately, I am high risk in both categories. However, ever since my driveway had its makeover, coming home feels...happier. When I get out of the car, I never know what color I might land on...delight.

I am probably not the first artist to feel this way, but I have insecurities around my art and creative process. Even though I love to make art that just feels good to look at, somehow that doesn't seem like a legitimate enough reason to make art. Not serious/political/intellectual "enough". With those "enough" obstacles, how can delight carry a piece through to "worthiness"?

I was recently offered an amazing 160-foot long blank canvas, a mural project for the City of San Jose. At the Arts Commission meeting where I was to present my final design, I listened to two other artists share their designs for projects they had been awarded. Both artists led with the worthiness of their art as it related to a political idea for one, and intellectual process for the other. I was in awe of the caliber of both the artists and their art. When it was my turn to pitch my idea, I had the intense urge to apologize for my design; it's rainbow color palette and imagery that included lots of butterflies and flowers. I felt certain the community that had selected me as the artist would love it, but certainly not the community of imaginary art critics that live in my head. I wanted to present myself as a serious artist but perhaps I had veered off course in creating a design that was crafted simply to be beautiful.

In the middle of my stammering and internal withering, an individual that had attended one of the neighborhood input meetings for the mural that the city had organized raised his hand. The man said that he felt that their community had been listened to by the artist, and the design very much reflected the themes that the community wanted to see in the artwork. I have never felt more gratitude for an unsolicited testimonial. After he spoke I regained confidence in my process as a collaborative artist, and I remembered my why. The concept was subsequently approved by the city.

Here is a sneak preview of the mural to come.

The local community hopes to install a children's park in front of the mural. Well meaning adults will argue in favor of the park because kids need a safe place to play, because physical exercise and vitamin D is good for their health, and because research supports the importance of play for brain development and social skills. But the kids? They are going to go play at the park because joy feels good. Sometimes, as adults, we forget that joy and delight might be a perfectly good reason to do something.

With love,
 Fri, 29 Jun 2018 17:11:14 +0000 Morgan Bricca 463 at https://www.morganmurals.com Dragons, Glitter, and "Selfie Moments" https://www.morganmurals.com/blog/dragons-glitter-and-selfie-moments

New Interactive Mural at Blach

A group of students at Blach were tasked to help me design a mural for their school. Lining up for library time just got a little more interesting.

It was lunchtime when I was wrapping up to go and taking final photos. When I looked carefully at the photos later I noticed that the kids had organized themselves around the art, preferring the "grassy" squares and spots along the painted river.
