A few years back, I painted the outside of the multipurpose room at my kids school with a landscape inspired by an old fruit box, since the area used to be mostly apricot orchards. When the PTA approached me about painting the inside of the multi as well, I thought I might try something a little more odd ball. I wanted to keep with the fruit theme, but add surprise and delight for the kids.
Amazingly, the flying fruit concept “took off”! Now the 50′ long wall on the inside of the multipurpose room is covered in a blue sky with clouds and flying fruit machines. The inspiration comes from steampunk/retro-futurism as well as a living classroom/ commissary/ food fight twist and a personal campaign to get my kids to “eat more fruits and veggies”. I created some of the fruits on panels with strategically place bolts, rope and wire to give the art a 3D effect. It might be a whole new genre!
Here is a photo of the door from the inside, and a view from the outside with the door propped open.
This is my favorite path to run along in the mornings. The light breaks through the oaks that create a tunnel over the path. It is for moments like this that I roll out of bed and lace up my running shoes.

School is out now. The kids and I get to slow down a bit. The year went by so fast! Too fast. To celebrate our first day of summer break today, the kids and I took a bikeride through the hills and made apricot cobbler from our decrepit tree out front. The tree has to be colosing in on 100 years old, the fruit is as sweet as ever. We are headed to the beach this weekend, camping with dear friends. Life is sweet. There is so much I feel grateful for.
